Kichadi

2 tablespoons oil
2 cloves
1 piece cinnamon stick
3 cardamom pods
1 dash turmeric powder
2 tablespoons ground fenugreek
1 onion
1 bell pepper
2 cups brown rice
6 cups water
2 teaspoons salt
1 cup split peas

Directions

1 Remove cardamom seeds from pods and saute spices in oil in large pot.
2 Add chopped onions and bell pepper; saute until onion is soft.
3 Add rice and cook for 5 minutes.
4 Add water and salt and boil; cook on low for 20 minutes.
5 Add split peas and cook for 35 minutes more.
